SM charging problems

Can't seem to keep the generator charging. Have put on two new regulators and they don't last very long. They both look like nothing is wrong with them. Made sure the switch box cover is grounded good.Have checked and cleaned all battery and wiring connections. Generator checks out good.New brushes and o.k. armature commutators. Bad place in the wiring that I can't see ???

If you put a voltmeter across batt terminals, what is reading? Is batt dying overnight or over a week. Need lotta feedback. Everything you can print. Are you running lights and such? Quality regulators or chinese? What happens when they are replaced?

Battery is good . Will crank it for a few days until it gets run down. Just isn't getting charged. Haven't checked the voltage. Ampmeter does not show any charge. Turn the lights on and it shows discharge.Don't use the lights. No other electrical use.NAPA reg. New regulator works for a few months.Maybe its just gremlins. I seem to only have exotic problems. lol. p.s. Regulator is grounded good.

Try using jumper wires between the F terminals on the gen & reg. Also jumper between Arm & Gen Armature terminals. If system charges, check wires between gen & regulator. If no charge, ground field terminal on gen. If charge now, trouble in regulator/wiring. If still no charge, connect a jumper through an auxilliary ammeter from the battery through the ammeter, & to the "bat" terminal on the reg. If it charges now, the wire from the "bat" on the reg to the ammeter is suspect.
Look up John T's troubleshooting guide on charging problems. Also Bob's advice.

It takes time but if you work through my Troubleshooting Procedure the cause for not charging, like if its the Generator or Voltage Regulator etc. can be determined.......

You certain the system charges when a new regulator is installed? If it is it will push the ammeter needle far to the charge side with the engine running at speed. Also a voltmeter across the battery will indicate 7.0 - 7.5 volts.

If it's NOT charging, temporarily bypass the regulator by first grounding "F" terminal at the regulator. Then with the engine running at speed jumper the GEN and BAT terminals at the regulator.

If it now charges the regulator is no good. However if still no charge, either generator is bad or there's an open circuit in the generator/regulator/ammeter wiring.

---

Also: Have you polarized the generator? (Momentarily jumper the reg's GEN and BAT terminals with the engine shut down).

Post back what you find!

Are you still set up for 6volt + ground? Or are you using a + ground regulator on a - ground system? Do you polerize the generator when you put the regulators on?

Yes, I polarize the system whenever I replace the regulator and it is still 6 volt + ground.

Yes, it will charge for weeks or months before it craps out. When it is working, the battery stays up.
