Problem shifting

My problem tractor is a Case IH 385. I know it is not a Farmall but it is a IH design, and I felt the experts on this forum would be of more help.

It is my Mom's now (my Dad's deceased), my BIL borrowed it to bush hog a friends property. Since he brought it back I cannot get it into 3rd or 4th gear in High, Low, or Reverse. I know he backed the bush hog into something hard, because the back wheel used to swing freely and now barely moves at all. I don't see how that would matter, but I thought I should mention it.

I am a shade tree mechanic, I do not have a shop at my disposal. Is there anything I can try or do I have to call a real mechanic?

Adjust the clutch according to book spec.
Look carefully at all aspects of the linkage (pivots and bushings, as well as rod ends and wear in holes.
If it seems tight and no lost motion, it may be time for a second pro opinion, and reduction in BIL options for use of the tractor. Ask him when it started acting up! JimN
 
Hi Eric, 385 has same shift mechanism as 495 go to caseih.com then service and parts and then parts and search for 385 and under Drive Train Pages 7-22 & 7-26 show pictures of the shift mechanism. The speed transmission is behind the clutch housing and under the battery box. The shift control rods go under the cover on top of the transmission. Check to see if the proper shift rod is being pushed or pulled for 3-4.
Fwd/Rev/Hi/Lo-Range transmission is under the front of the seat.
Some people have broken off the shift lever that goes into the transmission see following part number: item 16 3129172R1 ARM ASSY. ARM ASSY, speed shift actuating 3rd/4th.

Never loan the wife and never loan the tractor. Everybody will be better off. Look over all linkages and arms, etc. Probably see something broke. Does clutch feel like it working right?
