I'm new to the forum and just bought this tractor. I'm waiting for a manual to arrive, but want to change the gear case oil. I see where to drain it in 2 places, but how much oil and what type to I use? Also, how do I know when it's full or how much do I add? Thanks much! Kurt

6 Gallons 140 wt. - unless you live in the extreme north, then 90 wt. Use GL-1 grade; it will not cause old seals to start leaking.
There is a "full" plug on the left side of the tractor behind the clutch rod. You can fill gear case/trans case until it starts to come out that hole. but, it is still going to be about 6 gallons. Easy to do. Repeat every 10 years.

(quoted from post at 17:02:54 08/30/08) just picked up 5 gal 90/140. but think its gl-5 what is gl-1?
It is the old, original formula which was in vogue when these old tractors and their seals were made. mike

In my opinion GL 5 will be fine. As far as GL 5 being hard on seals, I have M that has had GL 5 or at least multi purpose gear lube in it for at least 40 years. The M sat in open front pole shed for about 30 years until I got it out and started running it about 5 years ago, pulled frame cover cleaned out transmissiom/dlfferential ( everything looked good inside) filled it with GL 5 and it is still up to full check plug and nothing has been added.

I had to go looking for the GL-1 oil when I wanted to change out my M's rear end, and I got it for about 30 dollars for 5 gallons. (I wanted to save some $, since the M holds 13 gallons)

I went to change out one of my H's, and the GL-1 was up to over 60 dollars this past week. So, I went to the local Temco dealer and got some 80W-90 GL-5 for ten dollars less, and things seem happy. Ill see how the seals look soon, since I just did the change.

(quoted from post at 15:06:27 08/31/08) If it's like the M it has a fill hole on the deck to the right of the steering post. ...Randy
That's not at all what he asked about, but what the heck - it can't hurt anything to tell him.... mike
