H BALLAST RESISTOR

I am in the process of converting my 1943 H to 12-volt i installed a ballast resistor from a chrysler in-line in the power wire going to the coil but when I turn the ignition switch on smoke starts coming out of the resistor? If I take the resistor out the coil gets hot any ideas?

The resistor WILL get hot. If there is oil or grease on that resistor, you WILL get smoke. A better option I think would be to use an internally resisted 12 volt coil.

since the resistor is new will it smoke for a little while. It has a cloth material inside the winding and it is turning brown i'm sure that is what is smoking do you think it will quit after a while?

Perfectly normal for the resistor to smoke for 5 - 10 minutes the first time it's used.

That "cloth" inside the resistor winding I believe is glass fiber. Most likely it has oil on it from the manufacturing process. And that oil burning off is causing the smoking and brown discoloration you are seeing.

I wouldn't worry about it...

One right out of the box is going to smoke like that for 10-15 minutes or so, then if you touch it it will smoke again. So its normal for one to do that. Don't worry about it unless you mounted it some place that gas can get on it and oil. DO NOT touch it or you will burn your fingers

I'll add that it will be too hot and might overheat if turned on while not running. The points (or electronic trigger in a electronic ignition) pass current substantially less than full time (about 50 to 75% of the time) Air is also moving around the resistor and coil when running. Do not leave it on not running. JimN

THANKS EVERYBODY
That puts my mind at ease I'm only 23 and this 6 volt points stuff is all new to me but i'm learning especially with help like this thanks

Yep, happened to me when I converted my Farmall H from generator to an alternator system. I started the tractor and the resistor started smoking, looked at my new voltmeter guage I installed as the tractor was running, and it indicated the system was charging at 14.5 volts. So all was well, it quite smoking after 5 minutes, like they have all said.
