Votage regulator in my Alt? How to know

I just bought a 1960 240 Utility and the wiring was shot. I ma right now making a new wireharness and hope by next week to have her back and running.

When I got the tractor it was converted over to a 12V postive ground. Becuase of the bad wiring my postive cable was shorting at the battery. I am thinking of going over to a 12V neage ground.

I did receive this link so this is going to help me out. http://www.ytmag.com/articles/artint131.htm

When I tore down the tractor there was no votage regular in the mix. I am a little confused on how I make this harness work for me. I want to elimate the shorting out. I see how the regulator as 1 12V feed into it but it splits off to 3 different systems.

Also does anyone have a picture of were the voltage regultor attaches to the tractor? I am thinking of install a splitter there to take that one wire feed and split it into 3.

Thanks for your help

If this is not a "show queen", replace the externally-regulated Delco alternator with a Delco 10SI (-) ground internally-regulated unit. Then there will be no external regulator wiring to tangle with.

That is part of the problem maybe. When I got her she was setup as a 12V positive ground. I will have to check the alt and see what version I have.

Ok checked the tractor. I do have a delco-Hemy alt in there. It states made in the USE with a C under that. I am not sure what model version it is.

12 V "postive" ground and the "postive" cable was shorting at the battery?? You must mean the negative cable was shorting at the battery - right? If "postive" was at ground, it shouldn"t short to anything.

Veener,
That would be a Delco-REMY alternator. Have seen VERY FEW
that were positive ground, model and amperage are stamped in
the case near the tapped tab for the tightener. Have it checked
at an auto repair shop you may have melted it with + ground.

(quoted from post at 18:50:30 09/07/08) See the Delco thread above for ID photos.

Thanks. Mine looks like the 10SI. It has that plug at the top. I am not sure if this might be a problem but mine was not pluged into the top plug. I did not even have a plug for it.

Going to have it brought to a local shop to be rebuilt this week. Going to see if he can make it charge well at low RPM's.

All John Deere sp combines ( 55 and 95's at least) were 12 volt positive ground from the factory. Ialso had a 57 Ford car that was 12 volt positive from factory.

Well got the alt back and found out most of my issues. It is a (-) ground alt and the tractor was setup as being a (+) ground. I am redoing all the wiring now. Right now all new battery cables, rebuilt alt, and all new wiring going in. I hope to have her back and running this weekend.

Even batter news some what. She is now turning over kind of. The battery is shot also. :( Had it on a charger for 5 hours and it shows 12V but when you put a load on it drops and can bearly turn over the engine. I charged it on a low setting the battery got very warm.

I think because it was hooked up backwards all this time it got fried. The alt was also fried.

Well the 240 is not liking me. Got the new battery and coil in and went to start her up. Had some good cranking and then the starter started to smoke. Looks like the started toasted also. :(

So have that dropped off for a rebuild and setup for 12V. The starter was very old. The teeth on the end of it were starting to get worn out.

So by next week will have a rebuilt alt and starter. Then all new wiring, coil, and battery. I am hoping this will take care of all of the problems.
