Do I need to put a gasket on the gear box or is there a paint on substitute? Can I make a gasket myself if needed? Thanks !!

I think the gasket provides a gear mesh shim control. (some help here from others) My recollection is that is is a .005" gasket or so.

A gasket is needed otherwise the gears mesh too tight and cannot turn. I have made those gaskets out of a cardboard cereal box.
