I am looking for information on IH 986 and an IH 886. I am currently looking at both. Are these good tractors? Are there any weak points with the tractors? What type of fuel consumption do these tractors have? How do they ride? It will be used for hay making, light tillage, pulling hopper wagons in the fall, and pulling a 4 bottom plow.

Thank you for your advice.

i have three 986's for haying, swathing, baling, im satified with fuel, but i have larger tractors which burn a lot of fuel on light work.

I had an 886. I liked the tractor with the exception of the shifting. The linkage was quite long and I couldn't shift it very fast.

My cousin still had his 886 that he bought new in 1978 and has been used for all of the above with good results. The shorter wheelbase causes this tractor to ride with a little more "chop" than the 66 series (he also has 1466 and 1066) but of course is easier on fuel. Like all of the IH Hi/Lo 1-4 transmissions it shifts a little hard. If the rear-end fails it is expensive to fix. This one has not failed but his Dad also had an 886 and the rear-end had a major failure at 20 yrs/9600 hours.

My father bought 2 886"s one in 1978 (Has the ih engine) and one in 1979 (german diesel) the german had more hp. he sold that one in 1980 to the neighbor which has thousands and thousands of hours with no problems at all (just cold natured). My father just sold the other one this past year with only 885 hours on it. The ih diesel was more fuel efficient. would play with a 4x16 plow. Have to agree with the shifting not the smoothest.
