WATER IN TRANSMISSION

I drained the transmission fluid from the Farmal H I have been working on yesterday and there was
about 1/2 a gallon of water in it. Is this any thing I should worry about or just put new fluid in and leave it go?

The old oil was probably in there for many years. With condensation, seepage etc.it's nothing out of the norm to have a little water in there. Fill'er up and go.

Very common. I pulled nearly 2 gallons out of mine this summer. It gets in through the bolts, gear shifter and probably condensation. Drain it, refill and go.

I got about two gallons out of one H and about a gallon outta the other, very common. If they have been sitting for a while you can drain off the water and then top them up, but..if the rear gear oil hasn't been changed in a loonnngggg time ..then change it..oh and you will probably discover an oil leak after you fill it to the mark. It will need a seal in the drive shaft coupler. One thing H and M owners didn't do a lot of was service their tractors, they were so simple and reliable that topping up was all they mostly got.

I am going through a Super H now and had to take the top off. There are a number of troughs that direct lube oil to various places using gravity to run it where need be. In mine these troughs were plugged up with about an inch of sludge and goo. I guess if you had time it wouldn't hurt to take the top off and give it a good cleaning.

I just finished my 51 H. I had the same thing with a gallon or two of water.. I took the top off to be safe and am glad that I did.. The two main axel bearings where shot.. My self I would take the top off, buts its up to you.. That is just my 2 bits.

Change the oil, and keep the tractor inside. It will never happen again.

Most water infiltration is due to tractors being left outside in the elements when it is not in use. IMHO, condensation is largely a myth. Dad keeps his tractors inside except for the rare occasion when they get caught in the rane, and the transmission lube is dry as a bone.

What about putting some kerosene in it to flush out the gunk in there? I have heard of a few guys
that have done that, because I dont really want to take the top off.

I got home 2 F 12's that look like they have been outside for the last 40 or 50 years, but had no water in the tranny when drained.
