Winding down on the painting

Just have the tank, hood and grill and maybe a few other pieces to paint.
Then remembering how it all goes back together

Randy

Rolled the H out of the booth myself.

Not sure if I will paint all these pieces separately on the next H, sure is time consuming to do it this way

Used the PPG Omni line, epoxy primer, base coat, clear coat.
First experience using a gun and this kind of paint, I really like this system, more forgiving than using a enamel paint, pretty hard to get runs unless you really lay it on thick.

looks great randy!!! that will be one fine tractor when your done. hmmm..........take 200 cash for it??? i just started primering the m parts today. will prolly shoot a little color this afternoon

lol! Glennster! $200 might get you the front tires, Man those were $75 each

Are you using a white primer instead of gray? Any advantage to that?

You need more parts hung up on the wires ;)

Randy

i am using rm ep689 epoxy primer on everything first. after it comes out of the blast cabinet, i spray 900 wax and grease remover to wash parts, then shoot the 689. after the 689, i can color right over it. the tinwork that needs some bodywork with get that done over the 689, then ep24 or ep26 sandable primer, then color over that. this tractor is getting a single stage, i am going to use crossfire on it, owner doesn't want base clear. by the time this tractor is all done, he will have close to 12k in it including the purchase price. i like the white and lighter color primers(easyier for me too see any goofs!!!)

Glennster

Would I see much of a difference if I put another sandable primer over the 170 epoxy primer as far as a final finish for the sheet metal?
The finish on the smooth parts that I have done so far looks pretty good, like the valve cover.

Randy

I used their paint on a Troy Bilt tiller. If you want something that is good to sand is Martin Senour's Primeez that's a surfacer. I used PPG's paint code 71310 on the tiller. Hal

you can get it smooth as glass if you want by blocking it with a sandable primer. when we do a show car here at the shop, we prime and block minimum of 3 times to get the surface as smooth as possible before shooting color. if you want you can pick up a can of guide coat, its a black primer that you lightly speckle on the sandable primer, it gives you a reference point when blocking so you dont miss any spots.

Heck with the tractor, I am envious of the neat, clean shop!!!!!

But guys, I am of a different persuasion. You know you are painting those tractors 10 times nicer than they came from the factory. I am not even sure they used primer.

Ha Gene! Every time I walk in my shop it looks like a big mess to me ;)

Yeah, I think I will pass on the super shine treatment on the sheet metal, after all this H might be pulling the manure spreader when I start working on that one down the road

Randy

gene, the m i am working on is pretty much original, guy bought it from the original owner. only been painted once, quicky scuff and puff. below the original paint i am finding some white primer on the bolster and frame rails and an orange primer on the trans case and rear deck. and i found a cracked outer brake pedal, sent it out and had it welded. here is the afternoon painting

and here is the pedal after it was welded, just above the pivot

Terrific looking paint job! Tractor is going to look beautiful. Are you using Omni MTK? Sure layed down well. Where did you find such a large piece of plastic for your spray booth? I"ve used Omni 182 sanding surfacer primer on top of 170 on sheet metal and it really smoothes it over exceptionally well.

Glennster

Whose white epoxy is that? I wish 170 came in white as well as gray. I"m painting my 240U Federal Yellow and covering the gray sure has required many more coats than IH Red.

Comin' together nicely, ain't it?

I took my BN down to bolts and put the paint back to it the same way you are before puttin' her back together.

You'll have a beauty when you're done.

Just by coincidence, my next project of any size is the 100 spreader.

paul the primer is rm ep689. great stuff, you can use it over sandblasted parts and castings. if no further metal work is required, you can color coat right over it. a little on the spendy side, about 150 gallon. here it is

Coming along really nice Randy. Wish I could progress for my own, but I haven't really touched it since April, unfortunately. Time and money keep it sitting in the garage. :?

Paul, I picked up the roll of plastic at Menards, I think it unfolds to 20 feet by whatever the length of the roll. It was the heavier thickness stuff.

Lots of pics on my web link below in modern view.

Neblinc, you have done an EXCELLENT job thus far. One day I will build my dream shop. Until then, I think I am going to hold out on painting my Farmall 504. Why shoot it outside then store it outside? I want to take it down some before I prime and paint, but not as tore down than the H!

I am hearing alot more tractor painters are using EPOXY PRIMER over conventional primers. Does it actually seal the metal and any rust in? Does it have better adhesion? It sounds like a cool product that is worth $200 a gallon.

What did you do your floors with? Did you build the benches? Do you want to paint my 504????

Charles

Charles, I just went by the recommendations of the great guys on this forum who have painted more tractors than I ever will. Seems the epoxy primer is the way to go.

Yes I built the benches and put down epoxy on the floor of the shop.

There is a link to my shop build website on my H projects page that has pics of the bench. I think it is on the last page.

Oh, and think I will pass on painting your tractor
