Super C sputtering

Hey fellas I got a 53 super c that I keep having problems with it sputtering. It doesnt get used much so I know that doesnt really help the cause. It seems to me like a plug each time seeing its not a fuel problem. It always sounds like a plug is dead, a steady skip, but will sometimes clean up for a few seconds. I have installed new plugs(autolites), clean the old ones and still has the same problem. I havnt had much time at all to mess with it but I was thinking it could be timing. Can someone tell me the procedure on how to time it...

Also any ideas are welcome! I really want to get her going good for plowing and the upcoming pulls...

Thanks,
Pete

Does she run the same right after installing new plugs? Or does that not make any difference?

Sputtering can occur because the ignition timing is too fast, because of a vaccuum leak, or if it occurs only at wide open throttle, but not at an idle, you may have a weak ignition coil. It could also be caused by an inadequate fuel supply.

It can also be caused by improperly set/worn points. It can also be caused by a worn distributor - meaning too much side-to-side play in the distributor shaft, thus making it impossible to ever get the points set properly. Take the cap, rotor and dust cover off the distributor and see if you can wiggle the shaft side-to-side. If there is much movement, it will never stop "sputtering" as you say, until the distributor is repaired or replaced. Good luck. mike

Pains me to say it, but this might be the core of the problem. One of the most neglected/overlooked/nere-knew-it-was-there lube points on a SuperC is the zerk on the distributor shaft.

Just had that problem with my 230. Pulled the distributor cap off cleaned the corrosion off the plug leads on top of cap and the rotor runs like a champ. I have to do that with my cub to, about once a year. I think the cause is their not used enough.

Howdy
If it hasn't had a complete tune up for a while replace all tune up items, dist caps and rotors fail a lot faster than people think, I see people advising to replace the coil more often than normal tune up parts a coil will (should) outlast 20 sets of plugs etc.

It will run good for a few but it eventually she will start to pop and fart...I failed to mention that about 1-2 years ago when I got it running she got new cap, points, wires and coil...could the points be out of adjustment? maybe there arnt too close causing the plugs to run cold maybe? just a thought...thanks for the replies!

well it doesnt blow any blakc smoke...but i guess that doesnt always mean she isnt rich...the plugs do turn black after a while, kinda like they load up. Ive tried my best to adjust the carb but whatever i do it doesnt seem to change much...maybe Im doing it wrong??? Again any input with greatly be appricated...

Wiggle the distributor shaft Up down and sideways (not in out) if you can move it detectably it is worn to the point of needing to be rebushed. JimN

Yeah - like I said....

Jake: You ask, "Could the points be out of adjustment?" Of course they could be out of adjustment. Try checking them. Check them on all four lobes to see if the distributor shaft is moving sideways from wear. mike

You could also have an air leak around the exhaust manifold or the carb mounting flange. That'll sure make 'em sputter. mike

Your right, I could just go check them, but the tractor is 4 hours away from home sir...so I want to see next time that I go to my parents house what I need to do. In regards to my question, it was more geared towards would that be a symptom. Thanks for the input buddy

No problem, pal. Glad to be of help. mike

Jake:
You might want to ad this one to your list also, ol' buddy. Check the valve lash. Extremes either way with regard to valve lash can cause a miss.....
