1940 B has chatter, sounds like metal on metal. When I press the clutch all the way down it stops.I barely let it out and chatter.Moves in all gears forward and reverse.

Probable throwout bearing. It is a split to fix. It will be important to replace the P Plate, friction disk, and pilot bearing as well. Check the splines on the input shaft, and dress any burrs found on them, or replace it if worn/rough. Face the flywheel and make sure the step of the PP mout surface stays in spec. JimN

Hi
Just curious Jim, with the engine running, anytime you push in the clutch pedal the throw-out bearing goes to work and contacts the fingers on the pressure plate. Why would the problem go away by pushing the pedal further down? When foot is not on the clutch pedal the throw-out bearing is doing nothing. I only ask because a kid I work with asked me a very simular question tonight about his Eagle Talon which I understand is something like a car. He wanted to take me on a road test but I didnt fit inside.

Without having seen it, I will say that many in That series have Graphite block Bearings, with a wear plate on the fingers, or built into the bearing, others are traditional ball thrust bearings. Either of these can be pushed to the point that the wear is not causing noise. This may be due to the pressure plate being pushed so far (by the fingers) that they are forced to run true, or the fingers running on a different spot on the bearing. While at intermediate angles they are allowed to be irregular in height, thus the rattly noise and vibrating pedal. Some do this, some don't. Another factor night be the wear on the Throwout bearing guide (which happens most just below the normal point of disengagement. But in either case it is in the bearing that the issue manifests it's ugly head. JimN
