Farmall H Trans. Knock Update

Hi all,
I posted before about my Dad's 1944 H having a knock in the transmission. I looked at the drive joint the other day and 2 of the nuts were almost all the way off the bolts, tightened them up and still has the knock. I took off the transmission top cover today and drained the transmission and checked out the gears. There is a shaft with some gears on the top towards the front, there is a gear on that ahaft with a few chunked off teeth. I found a nut in the transmission housing and I'm thinking maybe that nut got into the gear and broke the teeth on the gear. I don't see any other broken or chipped gears, do you think this gear is the problem? I have a picture here with the busted teeth circled in red.

Thanks,
Andy

I can't say for sure but it sure looks like it to me... at least you found something that was obviously wrong. I had a knock in my H that I never could find the source of (even after taking it apart three or four times). I ended up just swapping the entire transmission out of another parts tractor in the end. Big pain.

In hind sight, I think mine was a bearing, but I sure could never prove it. Good luck!

I think of chipped teeth making a click, Bearings knock. How are they ? BTW, Where did the nut come from ?

ps Tell you Dad to park his tractor in the shed.

I'll look at it better in the daytime, it was getting dark out, so I did not have much time to look at it. This transmission is one off a 1945 H, when my Dad bought his H, the transmission had a large patch and a lot of brazing on the bottom of the transmission housing and it leaked, so we put on this transmission off a parts H and this transmission worked great until it got the knock. I wish we had the old transmission because it would of had the parts we need for this one, but that transmission got scrapped.

Thanks,
Andy

I'll look at the bearings soon, the nut is not part of the transmission, it might have fallen in there when we put this transmission on the tractor a while back. We don't have a shed so the tractors are outside.

Thanks,
Andy

One thing I notice when looking at the pictures is that you definitely have water in your rear end oil. I wouldn"t be surprised if it leaked in from the cover bolts. If your tractors stay outside, like ours, make sure that the cap screws are sealed with silicone and that the pipe plug for adding fluid is completely tight and that the threads do seal. Water is hard on both gears and bearings. However, something catastrophic occurred to take two teeth in a row off of that gear. That nut is a possibility, but I would think that it would have stopped the tractor dead when it happened, and not just started knocking. I dunno.

Never throw anything away.
Roll the gears around & give a careful look at the teeth that mate with the broken ones. There is probably damage to 1 or 2 teeth on that gear also.

I believe (though it was a while ago) that I indicated that gear as the culprit. It is the constant mesh drive gear used in every gear except fifth. A donor trans, or gears will be needed. The lay shaft gear will also be toast. My uncle had an H with that gear damaged. Clicked every day for 6 years. JimN

I let the tractor drain overnight so I could see the bottom of the transmission. I found a few more nuts, a couple were crushed like they were jammed in the gears, I found a couple cotter pins in there and some broken part floating in the oil, looks like part of a bushing or something and I found a drive joint bolt in there. I don't know how all these parts got in there, but they must be part of the problem. All the bearings look and spin nicely. Also you said "That nut is a possibility, but I would think that it would have stopped the tractor dead when it happened, and not just started knocking. I dunno"- When Dad was driving it, he said a couple times the tractor would come to a complete stop and lock the rear wheels, so I'll bet these parts are jamming the gears. All the other gears I can see look really good, I jacked up the rear wheels and turned all the gears and they look good except the one with the chipped teeth.

Thanks,
Andy

I spun the gears and they look fine, except the one in my picture. Read my reply to chadd. There were some more nuts, a broken bushing or something and a bolt down in the bottom of the transmission.

Thanks,
Andy

Thanks Jim, If you think I need that gear, would I call it the "constant mesh drive gear"? I'm just wondering so I can tell people which gear I need.

Thanks,
Andy

Hi all,
Me and Dad looked at the transmission gears today, there is a gear right below the chipped one in my picture, that gear has a whole tooth gone, that is the problem for sure. I'm going to look for a good gear and let you guys know when I get it fixed. Thanks for all the help.
