Old reliable has quit on me. Went to start it the other day, hit the switch and nothing happened. Hooked it up to the charger, still nothing. Drive twenty miles, buy new starter button, install still nothing. Now I am really wondering whats going on. When ever I hit the button an unanchored eyebolt on the battery box stands straight up. So I took the battery out of the box, removed the box and it will almost stick to the frame. What has happened? I have a good battery, I cleaned the posts. I set the battery in the tractor without the box and when I hit the button the positive cable raises about two inches off the frame? Any ideas guys, you have never failed me before.
Thanks

Does starter make any sound at all? Could be that starter is stuck in ring gear, to check losen bolts holding starter on and move it a bit . Check connections on battery and on starter and ground. If it is 6 volt need excellent clean connections. Just because they look good does not mean there isn't a film especially on battery end. Make sure cables are in good shape. You can also pull starter off and check it for function off the tractor. Do you have the type with starter button top of the starter? There may be a bad connection between the contact on starter and contact in button. TRy the simplest things first and go from there.

Does the starter make any sound when you try starting it? Make sure the cables and connections are good. Take off the starter and make sure the drive gear is in good shape. Also make sure the starter is getting a good ground connection. If you still have problems, you might need to take your starter in and get it repaired.

The info you supplied tells me it is jammed. Put it in fifth gear and rock the rear tire violently back and forth. This moves the engine and clears the jamb. The fan will turn just a bit when it is free. Then try to start it. It will probably work.
THe starter needs to have a clutch type drive gear installed CasIH, and Steiners tractor have the gear. The cables were jumping because of high magnetism associated with high current flowing to the stuck starter. JimN
