Thanks to you guys for the advice on the new style starter drive. The old style would not engage at all on my Farmall 100. I cleaned up the teeth on the ring gear with a dremel tool and it now engages every time with much less impact than the old style. I would recommend anyone changing to 12 volts charging system to change the starter drive also. It is much smoother engaging the flywheel and I believe doesn't do the damage to the teeth that the old style does.

Lewis: I'm glad to hear that drive worked for you. I might add it should also be a priority for folks staying with 6 volt, like you say it engages more smoothly and I believe they crank easier.

It's now 16 years since I got my first new type drives. And I experienced same as you, both my SA and 130 starters came home from a rebuilder, both with new starter drives. One starter worked well on either tractor, while the other starter would not engage on either tractor. I looked them over and discovered the drives were different. I called the rebuilder, and he explained he only had one in stock, thus he got the other one from CaseIH dealer. Bring it back, I'll replace it. When I arrived he was surprised to learn it was his old type Bendix that I wanted to replace.

I'm actually quite surprised this problem still exists. The IH partsman I dealt with in 1992, actually thought I was living in the dark ages, said he hadn't sold anything but the new type in the past 20 years. That would indicate this starter drive has been around 36 years plus.

For the rest of you folks out there, go for these drives. I use my tractors a lot, have never experienced a lock starter since these were installed. The teeth on my SA ring gear were quite decent back in 92, however the 130 ring gear did not look great, however the new type drive continues to work well on the same ring gear. It works so well, I didn't bother to install a new ring gear when I did the clutch in 2002.

I may have confused some folks in the past, calling this a clutch drive. I now realize not all folks use the word clutch, although I've done a bit if checking this past week, to see what various parts guys use. Old guys like me all use clutch, younger folks are updated on "NEW TYPE", even use the parts number.

It's a starter clutch, the guys that want a starter clutch and ask for a Bendix cause the confusion. A Bendix is a Bendix--obsolete design.

Bob: Clutch type starter drive is how it was described to me back in 1992, by an CaseIH partsman. That is what I've called it ever since, including here on discussion. Some of these guys claim they go to CaseIH and are told, "They have never heard tell of such a device."

I have no idea what the problem is, I've asked at 3 different dealers since 1992, and they all know what a Clutch Type Starter Drive is.

My dad had the same problem, couldnt stop calling it a Frigidare instead of a refrigerator.
Went with him to Sears one time to order a part, he got all flustered when the guy said "we dont carry parts for a Frigidare". My dad sais well I bought the damn thing here!!!! We had a Sears Coldspot. I believe that must have been the problem. Dont call a Coldspot a Bendix.
