SMTA TA woes

I've been working hard and trying all the suggestions I've received on the externals of that rascal. I'reduced the slippage 50 per cent. None in first or second gear.
New question. How much effort should be required to pull that TA lever aft? On my 966 it's a stubby lever that just flips back with a light touch. On this beast it's almost a two arm tug of war. I actually feel like I'm goint to bend or break something. SHoud it act or feel any different with the main clutch depressed?

The T/A we had on our 560 and the T/A on my current 300 I think are very similar to your SMTA at least the lever. You should be able to easily pull the handle back with a firm tug with one hand and yes pushing the clutch in does make it easier to pull back. Hope this helps. Good luck.

One hand should eaisley pull the TA. lever back and it should go forward with no effort. Are you sure everthing is adjusted by the book? Armand

Not slipping in lower gears is a false sense of improvement. There is no way to "make them better" The only clutch being used is the one way ramp and rollers. It does not adjust. The TA will slip in all gears when engine power use exceeds the holding power of that one way clutch. It is just that in the lower gears, the driving force needed to move the tractor is much less. Pulling a load (plow, or other field tool) will slip the rollers easily.
Kevin Meyer on this site has good prices, and good product. Hy capacity also provides good parts. It needs three parts, a new engine clutch disk (minimum) a new TA clutch disk (Minimum) and a ramp and roller setup to fix the actual problem. The first two are just insurance to prevent the need to split it again soon. I would also put in a TA throwout bearing, and a main clutch throwout bearing. If it were Mine. JimN

Yeah, I've exhausted all the easy external fixes. It's time to bite the bullet and do the double split, bite another 500 dollar bullet and install compelte rebuilt unit, another 200 for new clutch disc, and new throwout bearings, and gaskets On the bright side with only 10 hours of daylight there's lots of shop time available.
My bargain basement SMTA (8200 invested), just went way over selling price.
Geez, I might have to go out and buy a plough for it <G>.

Do you know what you have for oil? It makes a difference. I fixed a F400 doing that.

Buy the fifteen gallons of Hy-Tran. If it doesn't fix the situation, drain it out and take it back (just kidding). But seriously, drain it out, do the double split, and put it back in. You probably need new oil anyway.

I dont know where you are going for your clutch and throwout bearing, but I paid around $130 for my 400 clutch and throwout bearing from parts store
