Janicholson .....H Carb Float Closing Needle

I posted probably a week ago on my H carb leaking a crazy amount of gas when I turn the gas on. I did install the new needle and seat. I took the bottom of carb off and turned gas on. Gas flowed through top half. I pushed up on float and the needle did shut off the gas flow. The float doesnt look to be catching anything in the lower half of carb. Is there something in particular that I should be looking for?

Make sure the float is not set too high, My F-20 carb would flood out before, I took the carb apart and the top of the float would touch the top on the carb and only close the needle part way.

Look for a shiny spot on the float, indicating where it may be touching the float bowl, and bend the float accordingly as needed.

The float in the H carb is a single float, not double, and that single float would have to be really bent out of shape before it could be rubbing on anything. Most likely you have the float height and drop set inaccurately.

It doesnt. I checked when I got it. The original float had a hole in it and that is why took the carb apart.

Check the float where the needle rides for an indention. Mine had a minor indention and it wouldn"t push the needle all the way up at the proper setting. Tried to take the indention out with needle nose pliers and ended up setting the float so it would ride up higher and push the needle all the way in.

Post back with what you find out.

Also, with the carb off, you can shake it up and down and listen for the float moving and if it is rubbing on anything.

Most of the things I would suggest are mentioned. Some new needles can hang up in the bore of the seat. Some tangs on the float have worn spotsthat push crooked on the needle. Float drop keeps the float from dropping so low that the needle gets out of place (crooked) and won't slide up. I would check these factors, Polish the triangular sides of the needle a little with 600 grit paper, or match book striker pad, and put it together. Good luck, JimN

When adjusting the float position, the small 'tab' behind the pivot rod is what gets adjusted. Correct?

Yes. It is necessary to be tender and gentile. a little is a lot, and a bit more is broken. if it has a dimple in it from wear, it can be soldered with non lead solder pretty easily (use a pencil type iron, and do it with least heat to make it flow. Then file down the tab, and polish. JimN
