Ok, I removed rubber tube bewteen top of block and top of ratiator, this is where the t-stat. should be? well there is not one there , i am goin to put one in,what way should it go in, does the water flow out of the top of rad into block, or out of block up into rad. also, what holds the t-stat in.
thanks

No, The thermostat on a Super C is in the cast fitting that attaches to the head, not in the rubber hose. There should be grooves on the inside of that fitting that you put expanding rings into and the thermostat is held between them. I think that the rings are still available from a Case/IH dealer

Water comes out of the head into the top of the radiator.

Heat rises so the hot water would flow that way on its own (like the thermosiphon system in the tractors without t-stats). With a water pump to help things along, it flows in that same direction. Rises as it heats going through the motor. Falls as it cools passing through the radiator. So, yes, it flows out of the top of the motor.

You're in the right place for the t-stat. As I kinda suspected in last night's exchange, it sounds like the clip that holds it in place is missing. You might try CaseIH for part #257441R2 to see if they can get you one. It's an odd-shaped wire retaining ring, and I've only had mine open once, and it was there, so I'm not sure what else to suggest as a replacement. Maybe someone else will have an idea in that regard.

The thermostat should indicate the hot (engine) side on its flange.
