Super M pistons

I bought this old tractor wintertime project a couple weeks ago. All nice sheet metal except batt. box, new rebuilt generator and starter and nice radiator. The valves were real noisey, no oil to the top, have,nt figured that out yet. I pulled the head off today and there,s very little ridge in the sleeves but the fire crater pistons seem to have a lot of slack rocking them back and forth. I,ve had a bunch of car engines apart and these IH pistons seem loose compared to an average older car engine. I had this thing running a couple times and it did'nt smoke.
I think somebody put some money in this and ran it until the valves, guides and rockers started rattleing and parked it. I'm hoping the center cam bearing is in wrong, it's got oil press. on the rear brg. to the gauge and press. on the frt. brg. to the governor but nothing off the center brg.
So anyway with out measuring those pistons does a little slop sound like junk? The sleeves sure look nice, I was expecting the pistons to fit tighter.

You now know how hard it is to pull the head. Putting it back together with the head/oiling problem fixed will be that much more than doing the whole thing now. With minimal ridge, I would leave it alone. JimN

Could the center cam bearing spun, or not installed correctly? Might explain no oil to the topside. It's possible its had new sleeves put in and they reused the old pistons?? Id be looking for that oil problem!! Cam would need to be pulled out and passages checked to see if the oil holes are inline with the passages,, thats if a bearing spun is suspected.

Id put it on an engine stand, or be real careful when new cam bearings are installed while its still in the chassis. Chad

Yeah, these engines are 'loose' by modern car standards, but don't forget they were cutting edge 70 years ago.

You can find out if the center cam bearing is right by putting a small diameter rod (think small unfluxed brazing rod) down the head oil supply hole and feel the rotation of the camshaft. If after two complete revolutions, you haven't seen the rod dip in the camshaft oil slot, or can't feel any movement, the bearing is your problem. If you DO feel the cam and know that port is open, the next step is your center main bearing.

Ive got a cracked head on a super M. I pull it in dead weight pulls can I or should I put a 450 LP or gas head on this and were is best place to get one.
