I had the hard starting issue on my H a couple of weeks ago. Everything pointed to a mag problem. So I figured I would install new points because these ones were about 6yrs old. I got the new ones in and adjusted and I thought I would use an ohm meter to make sure they are making contact. I have continuity when they are closed but also when they are open? This can"t be right, is it? Any ideas? Thanks Bob

Don't know about using an ohm meter. It may be too sensitive. Never tried it. The obvious is; be sure nothing is touching that would ground it. I've use a test light several times. Light goes out when the points open. This works go for initial timing when you've had the distributor out.

Multimeter/ohm meter will not work unless you disconect the wires from points. Points are ground thru coil(?) but for sure thru the condenser.
Unless you have a aviation magneto syncroizer(?) leaving points hooked up will not show on ohm meter when points open.

If it grounds through the condenser the condenser is shot. It will ground through the coil. Unhook the wire to check it.

Hey Bob,
Yes its right. The coil gives continuity from points to ground even when they are open. The condenser is an open all the time unless it is bad (shorted).

Thanks everybody, Everything checked out ok, I assembled it back together, installed it on tractor and it started up on second crank and runs good. Thanks Bob
