Case 1816 skid loader

I posted this on the tractor talk forum too. I am looking at an 1816, it has had the engine replace at one time with an Onan. The owner said a year or two ago he was using it and it just quit, like you shut of the key. It will crank over. Is there a distributor on it or is it electronic, the plug wires go into a two tower coil, the feed for the coil or is it the ground? goes under the engine shroud. That is all the further I got. I think I can pick this up fairly cheap, he will price it according to how much work it needs to get running. He has not tryed to get it going at all. Also has a major hydraulic oil leak at the right rear corner, the hydraulics use engine oil don't they?, How much does it hold? Just want to know what I should first look at on the Onan to get it going. I will probably first check spark, go from there. Has an electric fuel pump and I can here it run. Thanks, sorry it got so long.

If it's an ONAN 2- cylinder air cooled NHCV-xxxxxx--look for the points cover on top of the engine A rectangular aluminum cover about 3-4 inches long held by 1 screw. Take the cover off & the points & cond. are inside. Sounds like a condenser/ points problem.

Should have mentioned to check for voltage at the wire going into the points. If no voltage there, could be a bad/ disconnected wire any where in the ignition circuit. Check by running a jumper wire from the hot terminal of the battery to the points hot terminal. If it runs with the jumper in place, track down where you are losing voltage in the ign. circuit.

Thanks Brownie, now that I know where the points are that will be the first thing I do. Should be getting it home this weekend I hope. Might get lucky and it only needs a wire fixed or points, something cheap and easy would be nice of course. I suppose if it isn't that it could be the coil?

We've got a Hydra-mac 8C with an ONAN NHCV & it has an electric fuel pump---so don't overlook this possibility also.
These loaders don't have a lot of coasting range, & the engine stopped in the middle of crossing the hi-way one time & had to use the starter to get off the road. Think it was points that time. Usually is points or condenser though.
Where are you housed up at? We're down here South of Wilton.

I can hear the pump running when I looked at it. I am going to try to haul it home tomorrow if I can get it bought right. Will check for spark and fuel first and go from there. I stopped at the local Napa machine shop and the guy showed me the same Onan tore apart and where the points are, and I looked it over pretty good. I am in NE Iowa by West Union.
