Starter is spinning fine. If I un-stick the bendix gear, it works fine, till the bendix gear sticks again.

When the bendix gear is stuck, it is all the way to the rear of the bendix. there is a thin washer on the back (rear-ward) side of the bendix that looks as it is made of a fiber-like material. Seems like there is supposed to be a white felt-like washer somewhere in this area, but my starter doesn't have one. Maybe it pads the bendix so it doesn't get stuck.

Do I have to have the starter rebuilt to stop the problem ? Thank God it starts well on the crank !

The drive is comming back too far on the splines, put another shim washer on the shaft in that location Steel or wave spring washer will do (possibly more than one) Just enough to stop it bottoming. there is a new clutch type drive that will cure it as well different than the original. JimN

Janicholson -- How do I get bendix shaft apart to add said washer - shim ??

HughM -- I stopped and talked to one of the few mechanics in the area who still works on old IH. He said for me to oil the splines, but would not say what to use. Any ideas ? Is it worth the trouble to oil ?

Mechanic also said for me to make sure 2 bolts on heavy flat coil spring are tight into attachments. This sounds like good advice. Advice ?
