Just put rings, rod bearings, and rebuit head on SMD. Now it looks like stanley steamer with all the blowby. Hard to start on gas but once running sounds good and switchs over with out missing a beat ,runs good. An older fella said to put biamy powder in each cylinder to seat rings. Anyone have any ideas as where to get somthing like that, or anyother Ideas? Thanks in advance Doug

Do not put abrasive into the engine at all!!!Worst idea I have ever heard. Bon-Ami Is a brand of scowering powder. If it is making steam out the breather, there could be issues but I would run it for at least 20 hours under light to moderate load, then put it to work. If it still steams, (and the coolant remains full) I would run it for at laest 100 hours before thinking of issues. If there is coolant loss, there will need to be repairs made after determining where it is leaking. If the wrong rings were installed, there would be no way to get it to run on Diesel as well as described.
Choke the devil out of it when starting. It will (usually) require more choke than farmalls of gas persuasion. JimN

I had the same issue when I rebiult Super mdta. It started pretty good but had alot of blow by. Everyone I asked told me to work the daylights out of it to seat the rings. I baled hay with all summer the more I ran it the better it got. After about 40 hours the blow by is very minimal.

how much wear was in sleeves, were they honed?ring end gap ? we take things for granted and then find out it was not done.to get them to seat you will need to run it at operating temp. and work it hard.like a day or two steady.if you us bonamy ,let it sniff in only about a table spoon full while working it hard. it wont hurt any thing.

Didn't measure cyl taper but didn't have any ridge in cyl's. Only checked rin gap in one cyl, little over ten thousands, had hard time coming up with rings,5 ring piston, 2 1/4" 2-1/8" 1- 3/32". John Deere sell a breakin powder like Bo nomi but we have decided to wait till spring to try and break it in. Just unreal how much blowby and run so good. Thanks Doug
