I bought a Farmall A a few weeks back for $500 and i'm not positive what year it is. I found the casting number but i don't know what they mean, the numbers are 63 42 DH, can anyone help.

The number you have is a part number, and it doesn't cross to anything in my parts catalog for an A.

The casting date codes are in a month/day/year format. Numerics for the month and day and a letter for the year that can be found in the serial number tables at the left.

They will be on what looks like a slightly raised strip with round-head screws, which was about what it was -- strips with the date were screwed onto the master from which the mold for the casting was made.

Sides of the tranny, torque tube and motor are good places to look.

Most As (the very later ones were exceptions) the motor serial number was the same as the chassis, so that might be an angle to approach, assuning it has the original motor in it. That number will be found on a machined flat spot on the upper edge of the crankcase, probably hidden by gunk and/or the governor control rod, just below the #1 (forwardmost) spark plug.

Ok i tooka second look and i found this number on gear box 12 6 0. Tis is the only other number on the block 12 5 0. All of the other numbers on the back end with DE.

okay! 12-6-O would indicate it was cast on December 2, 1945. Allow a little time for curing . . . and your tractor is likely an early '46. If you can find that serial number on the motor and its the original, it should be on the lower end of the range 146700-182963.

thanks for the help, the guy i bought it from said it was a 47 but i never that until i can confirm it.

Is the serial number plate missing from the left seat support? Looking up the S/N would tell you the year. Is the casting number from the engine? The engine number does not seem to be terribly helpful, since other Farmall A's listed in the Farmall Registry that had engine # 6342DH were made anywhere from 1941-1946.

rrogers: The number you've quoted 6342 DH is the block part number. If you look just below number 1 plug there is a machined flat surface with stamped letters and numbers. You may have to scrape a bit to read them. Letters are the model and numbers the engine serial number. On a Farmall A that engine serial number will be very close to tractor serial number.

If casting date codes are close (within 6 months of each other) very likely you have an original tractor. Every major casting has a date code, about 1/2" high digits with what looks like a round head, blade type screw between each of day , month and year. Day and month will be numbers, year will be a letter. N is 44, O is 45, P is 46, you can go forward or backward from those, except T and U were both used in 50 and V was not used.

i found the actual casting number it"s listed below in one of my other post. it wouldn"t alow me to edit the original post after i found the numbers

both the right and left seat supports are completly missing but the castin dat tells me late 1945.
