Need help rewiring my 230 farmall.

Hello, I am rewiring my 230 farmall. I am using the article at the below link....and furter down is a quote from the article. Now I am having trouble finding a .2 amp panel mount idiot light. Radio shack does not carry that item any more. Autozone and advance auto are about useless for this kind of thing. Does it really have to be a .2 amp? .2 amp is about 2.4 watt. Now the resistor can be 2 watts or higher, can the bulb be 2 watts be higher?

Thanks!

[i:d9aaf5dc50]The alternator warning light consists of small 12 volt lamp rated at about 0.2 amps. A #1815 bulb in a suitable lampholder (purchased at Radio Shack) works fine. A #1813, #161 or #194 instrument/side marker bulb in a suitable holder will also work. Make sure the lampholder is NOT grounded - i.e. both lamp terminals are brought out. (Note: If you don’t want to use a warning lamp, you can substitute a 10 ohm resistor rated at 2 watts or higher in place of the warning lamp.) [/i:d9aaf5dc50]

You don't want the resistance to be too high or the alternator will not receive the proper excitation current. It should be simple to find a 2 Watt bulb. They even spelled out the sources for you in the article.

Thanks for the resistance tip. That is very helpful.
The radio shack I was at last night did have the bulb, but not the in dash type holder. I want an in dash holder that goes in a hole like a toggle switch would. That is what I am looking for. Cant find it with that size bulb.

You can always mail order Radio Shack products, although in this case the shipping may be more than the item. But if you consider the cost of gas driving around it may be worth it. Have you tried "electronic components" in your yellow pages?

I recently put in an exciter circuit on my 1966 IH 140 with an Hitachi alternator conversion. I finally got tired of running the RPM's up high to get the alt to start charging. I used this item from NAPA #BK 3354011 . It fits in a 5/16" round hole just like a toggle. The bulb is permanent, and they don't give any specs on the bulb. I can only tell you it works perfectly, installs in an easy-to-drill hole, and looks as though it has been there since the factory. Alt now charges from start-up, which is one-third throttle for me. Both wires are isolated from ground and the bulb is small, which are the two key points. Here is a link:

This is the red one, you can also get amber, blue or green if you like to live on the wild side. For some reason, the picture of the other colors is taken from a better angle.

BTW, I had the same experience at RatShack. The Electronics component section is now down to a chest of drawers the size of an old-style tube TV. Very disappointing, as the space has largely been given over to overpriced junk accessories for cell phones and IPods.

Half the problem is knowing the name of what to search for.
I found the following two products at radio shack on line. There is no indication that they will fit together. The base has a 5/8 mounting hole, the bulb is .406 in diameter. Sounds about right maybe.

We have a napa store down town. Might be the way to go.

Thanks for the help.
