140 hydraulic helpppppppppp

dads 140

New User
i have a 140 farmall not sure what year it was my dads it run well but the hydraulic leaks oil into the eng. i have replaced the seal twice but after you use it for alittle it leakes does anyboby know what to do or where to get a rebuild kit or a good used pump dont want to get new cost too much rite now

I had same problem. I took the shaft to a machine shop and they built it up with some kind of cold process then turned it back down to original size. It was worn where the seal had rode on shaft.Have had no more problems

There is a device called a speedy sleeve, I've never used one, but several folks here at yt have with great success. Little early yet, they will be along shortly.

There must be a visible groove worn in the shaft. A new seal will only hold a little while like that.

Like Hugh, I've heard that a device called a "speedy sleeve" or "speedi sleeve" can be used in this situation. I guess it is a thin ring that fits over the shaft and covers the groove. They are supposed to work well.

Someone should be able to provide you with the exact speedi sleeve part number you need to make the repair.

MKirsch: I think the speedy sleeve has to be matched with the seal. I know I bought a front crank seal for my 130. It came with a matching speedy sleeve

Guess I've read a lot about the speedy sleeve here but nobody has every explained how it doesn't leak between the shaft and the sleeve unless it is bonded on somehow.

Also I'd assume it would have to be fairly thin to avoid having to get some kind of oversized seal or maybe you have to get a different seal anyway.

Guess I'll wait for someone to explain this. Thanks.

Hugh, my post crossed with yours. You answered the seal question. I suppose you have to mike the shaft to order the right sleeve.

Guess I'm still wondering how you don't have a leak between the shaft and the sleeve.

Thanks.

From what Hugh says, it sounds like the speedi sleeve and seal come as a matched set. The seal is apparently slightly oversize to account for the speedi sleeve, perhaps?

The speedi sleeve is an exact fit on the shaft and bridges over the worn spot. No leaks.

There is an interference fit between the shaft and the sleeve. Sleeve has to be pressed on. A little bit of Loctite can be used also.

Mkirsch: That package with the crank seal did surprise me. At the time I had no idea condition of the surface, still don't as I haven't taken the tractor apart yet. There was a 130 serial number split for the crank seal, just before my tractor, and only the last aprox 1,000 tractors use this seal. How they determined I needed a seal with a speedy sleeve is beyond me. I suspect I have some surprises yet to come. Oh well, live and learn.

I don't think the o-ring has to be different -- I have done only one speedi sleeve, that was on my C. I just matched the oring to the original, those sleeves are very thin, just thick enough so that the hole in the pump has to be enlarged. It is logical that if IH had a kit, they would supply a an oring with it (mainly so they can charge 3x the price of that oring anywhere else) -- but I bet it's the same one.

Same principal as the seals with the metal "cover", they are an exact press fit and don't leak.

Same answer, except that it was time for supper and I was in a hurry, so I misread your post, I thought you meant the hyd pump. However, I will back off some -- the crank is more important than the pump, also more complicated to repair; the sleeve may be thicker? So, maybe the seal is different.

CNKS: As I said in my earlier post, I haven't got into this project yet. One day last fall while at the IH dealer I asked for the seal and gaskets I'd need. There was a serial number split, and it wasn't until I got home I realized there was a sleeve in with the gasket.

Don't be too critical of CaseIH pricing, at least not here in Canada. On average we buy tractor parts 20% less than US using a common dollar. NAPA and other auto parts stores won't touch tractor parts here, the big two (Deere and CNH)and farm stores have them shut out on price.
