826 bad starter?

My 826 was spinning just fine up with an old Continental battery. Uses one 12 volt. I put in my pickups battery but it still just turns real slow. Not near enough to start it. All the cables are good. Does a starter motor on these go out like this? There's a new solenoid but I am guessing the old starter motor was just painted. Can there be something grabbing inside the tranny? It was running and starting fine a couple of weeks ago.

Just saw a post about how to test with battery cables. Problem is I didn't have any today so i'll try it next week.

But any other pointers would be a big help.

Thanks.

Not enough cold cranking amp's with just one battery and if ya think that your saving money by only using one battery wait till ya get the bill for a starter rebuild . That tractor need around 1200 cold cranking amps . Myself i would put two new 3EE batterys in it along with the proper cables and have the starter looked at.

I've been using 1 1100 CCA battery on my 826 for years. It gets started nearly every day. While a starter rebuild isn't cheap neither are those batteries. JMO

Depends on where ya buy batterys. And yes a groupe 31 with high cranking amps will get the job done MOST TIMES it is still not enough. When buying a battery look closely at the cold cranking amps at 0 Degrees . Two GOOD 3 EE's or should i say 3 EH will have more then that 1100 one you are using . Low amps are hard on starters.

Check for fuel tank clearance on the 3E size batteries, the parts store gave my uncle a set of them for the 756 and he didn't notice he had some interference with the fuel tank, and when it finally rubbed through the fuel ignited. The 8 may be different than the 7 but I know it takes 2E size batteries.

If you haven't already, remove the hot cable from the starter solenoid & inspect the lug on the cable end for arcing around the inside diameter of the hole. Our 1066 had the cable lug eaten out, & putting star type lockwashers on the connection fixed the problem. Worth a look.

I too use a single 1100 cca battery on my 826 and have been for 4 years (same battery dated 2002). The tractor had been converted before I bought it and appears to still have the original starter. I did take the precaution of replacing the battery cables with 00 gauge welding cables. Tractor spins up with alacrity and on those rare occasions when I have to start the tractor on cold days, which we all know takes a little effort with the notoriously cold-blooded D358, it has never run out of juice, or even came close.

I make no claim to have worked on all that many different tractors, so my comments are anecdotal and of limited value perhaps, but experience has convinced me that a single 1100 cca battery is OK in my case. I certainly won't be switch back unless I decide to restore the tractor at some point. I think the battery cables (which are only about 18 inches long) may help a little by minimizing voltage drop.
