Stage II Super M Hydraulic question

Just got a 53 Super M (stage II)and am learning all the differences from the 52s. This one has the live hydraulics with the res. under the gas tank where the battery once was. It has a valve purched on top of where you use to fill the old belly pump. This model has what I assume is a second res. where the old pump once was. Does this valve configuration bypass back into the upper tank as well as a lower tank? Bare in mind this is factory stuff, not some cobbled up job. The valve is loose at the base where it goes into the lower tank, and I need to disassemble all this to tighten things back up. There is no guidence at all in my IT manual for this type set up.

Stage II SM had no reservoir in the belly pump area from the factory. Rather the belly pump area in the housing is simply empty space.

Sounds as if your SM's has been modified to add extra reservoir capacity by using an old belly reservoir. If so it would best be arranged so the remote 4-way valve ("christmas tree" valve) exhausts into the lower reservoir. The lower reservoir then is plumbed to flow back up into the main reservoir.

The location of the hydraulic valve may be a red herring here.

It would be very rare to find a Stage II Super M that started life with a belly pump, then had all the Stage II acoutriments added later. Not impossible mind you, but not likely, either.

Bob M can confirm this, but if memory serves, the standard location for the "christmas tree" valve on a Stage II Super M is that spot where the fill pipe would have been for the belly pump. The valve mounts on a special elbow that either screws into the fill pipe hole, or has a flange on it that allows it to be bolted to the tractor.

There was also an aftermarket type valve that mounted in that general area too.

The original poster needs to take a closer look at what he has. With a christmas tree valve, you'll likely find a hose coming out at the base and running back to the under-tank reservoir.

On the Super H Stage II for comparison, the christmas tree valve mounts directly to the reservoir with a pair of elbows.

If tractor is a stage 2 and was equiped from the begining with live hydraulic and has the original type remote control valve there is a bolt with special washer accessed from inside center housing that holds valve tight in hole. Also used a cover on bottom of housing that looked like bottom of a belley pump. If the piece bolt goes in is there it will be hex shaped like a big nut just on top of housing where fill pipe goes in on regular belley pump. If you do have a belley pump inside housing we will need more information because something wouldn't be original. All stage 2 didn't come with live hydraulics, also does the starter mount with 3 bolts?

From the outside it will look like a pipe is running into a belly reservoir, but there should not actually be a reservoir there. Drop your bottom cover and look up in there - unless somebody has been messing with your tractor, there won't be a reservoir there..... mike

That's correct! On my Super M (late '53 Stage II) the "pipe nipple" that apparently connects the base of the Christmas tree valve to the torque tube is actually a piece of steel bar stock threaded at the upper end for 1" NPT male threads. It does NOT carry hydraulic fluid into the (empty) torque tube casting.

Yes, it is a 3 bolt starter. The holes on the side (where the pipes use to go) all have covers in them also. it has a huge "nut" under the hydraulic valve as well.

It does look more like a cover than a pump. The hoses(big suckers too) make a circuit from the pump, through the valve, into the res under the tank, back out. Soon as it warms up a degree or two (1 degree tonight) I'll pop off the cover on the bottom and see whay we have. Thanks a million fellas!!

Sounds like you have original set up. Remove the plate or bracket under housing and see if mounting bolt is tight broken or missing. If I remember right its a 5/8 dia. bolt. Probably 7/8 or 15/16 wrench head. Bolt screws up into the piece with hex on it. As others said its solid except for taped bolt hole and 1 inch pipe threads on outside. Should have a special contoured washer under bolt head to match contour inside housing. Return fluid exiting bottom of valve goes back into suction hose to pump. Hose should be passing through tee fitting above tee your remote valve goes into. For the remote control valve to work if hoses are in original locations the lever on unit under tank has to be locked in rear position. For the unit under tank to operate single acting hydraulics the other valve has to be locked closed. Good luck

Hi,
My stage 2 Super M has live hydraulics, someone added an extra set of couplers into the system, but it is original. I have the original op's manual for the tractor and it shows either live hyd, or belly pump hyd. I guess the belly pump finally disappeared when the SMTA came along.
