stepped pistons or flat top pistons

Flat toped were usually the sea level variey of piston. Stepped head means that portions of the piston tops are raised into the combustion chamber, reducing the volume, increasing the compression. Today's fuel is better in octane than that of the fifties and before. The compression can be raised to about 150psi with stepped head pistons and still run unleaded regular. (great question) JimN
