606 starting problem

I have a 606 diesel. It is a hard starter just like my 706 with a 282. But it is extremely hard. I think it may be the injectors, how do I tell exactly? Once it is runnung it runs good. I have had to rebuild the starter and i know its hard on my batteries, generator ect.
Thanks,

have you checked the glow plugs to make sure they are all working? does it crank over fast to produce enough heat to start? what is your procedure to start it?what does it do when it starts? smokes white? this is the sort of info. needed.need details. always guessing what customer is talking about, such as a few posts down.saves on stupid answers also.

It cranks over well as long as the batteries are charged. It pulls starts fairly easy. I dont get white smoke. I usually glow 30 sec. crank it a few times at full throtle, glow for a minute then crank it while still holding glow plug. Then it just puffs black smoke and ocassionaly fires. When it fires it takes a few seconds to get it going on all cylinders and will stall if I let off the glow plugs. I bought this tracor a year ago with the clutch out. Put a new clutch in it and input shaft seems to be a pretty good tractor. Use it manily to move rd bales. Thats about all I know.

You are not running the glow plugs long enough a glow plug run time of 30 seconds is good for outside temp.of 70 plus degrees and if you are trying to start in temps below freezen ya had best run them for over 1 and a half min. and keep running them till the engine runs smooth . Make sure that you do have heavy enough battery's for the job . You will find out that it is a lot easier on the starter . There use to be a guide in the form of a decal on the older diesel tractors with the glow plug run time for outside temp.

thats what i was aiming for is the proper procedure to start it and make sure it spins fast enough, right on! might want to check the timing just to satisfy your self.its like you need to be an ih man or these dont start. interesting even to watch at auctions trying to start them , then they grab the starting fluid. thats a no, no,

Vet is right with the glo-plug heat time. Don't know about the 606, but our 560 would always start down to -10. We used the glo-plugs heating for 2 1/2 or 3 minutes when temps were around 10 degrees. Less for higher ambient temps.

I run the glow plug for 30 sec let it turn over to fill the pre cups with some fuel then glow for a min and a half or longer. Its not the glow plugs because I have checked them and I can start my 706 with the 282. The tractor also starts better when its plugged in, but I think thats a given.

so what are you saying? does it start or not start.i am puzzled by your saying,"to fill the precups with some fuel".this is a precumbustion chamber for the glow plugs.this chamber only goes in 1 way, its marked top i believe...that can make starting hard also if not correctly installed.BUT once the glow plugs are red hot , then you crank it over so the ATOMIZED fuel is sprayed in and hits the hot air and explodes.you also mentioned black smoke while cranking.these ihc dont smoke black, thats not normal. it should be a grey hase, even when pulling hard.thats why i said to check the timingas you dont know what the other person did with this tractor.let us know how you make out.

Well first off just run the glow plugs and don't turn the engine over and run the glow plug a bit loner . Now it could be that the pump is not dead on the money and this will have and effect on starting . Ya may want to pull each glow plug and time how long it takes to heat as these are 12 glow plugs and they do take some time to turn cherry red .

Thanks, it will start but just takes some time. I will check the timing in the next day or so.
Thanks,
youngin
