Return to Oil pan gasket removal

Hey guys. In post #698248 I asked about the best way to remove the oil pan gasket from the crankcase. I got a lot of great ideas and I tried them all, except the air chisel.(I didn't have one)I tried Berryman's spray on gasket removal and that didn't work. So, I got the bright idea to try Easy Off oven cleaner. It worked great... I sprayed it on, waited for a few hours and started scraping with the chisel and it came right off. Try it!!! Thanks for all your help. Dan

Hello Dan,
Years ago I worked in a Case construction Dealer we would get trade in machines with the contractors name painted on them. We had a jar of Easy Off oven cleaner with a round ball on the cap. we would paint over the letters let it soak and then scrap it off with a razor blade. it worked great.

So this is good news on the easy off. I am replacing the gasket tomorrow on my 460D. My question is do I need to have lock washers on the pan bolts. I have dropped the bolts out already and some have them, some don"t. So should I use lock washers or not?

I usually get the cheap off brand of ez off at dollar general.

John has an interesting question about lock washers though. Since you don't really super tight the bolts. I guess you do tighten them enough to compress the washer though.

It seems to make more sense to me to use lock tite on pan bolts. What does everyone else do?

Hello John,
I can't say for sure what the factory set up was. A good rule of thum on pan bolts is if there is a heavy steel strap then lock washers if it's just tin then a flatwhasher and a lock. if the holes are dished in, then take a flat bar in a vise and hammer the holes flat. I tighten the bolts with a 7" rachet "tight" and if it is a cork gasket I retighten them after the engine was warm. Loctite will work if you get the threads completely free of oil but I would not use it on oil pan bolts it realy isn't needed.
Godd Luck Ed
