Identification Help

A while back, I told a story about a certain, uh, indescretion I comitted with my buddy"s Ford tractor. I assure you it was a passing thing, and my Super A and I are beyond it now.

Anyhow, my buddy finally made the move and got himself a red tractor. The hood and grill are missing and we don"t know what model it is. The plate on the right hand side of the transmission says that it is an IH made in England. There is a model # A480003P003946*. There is no number in the serial number space. There are no other numbers I can find on it other than casting numbers on some of the parts. Looks like it has a four cylinder diesel engine.
He paid $1500 for it, it runs, and he gets to keep the six foot bush hog attached to it.
Please tell us what this is, oh Great Ones.

The fact is we need a photo. The international crowd that frequents here might find the number, but a picture will get an answer in minutes. JimN

wcroom: Given the price your buddy paid for a 4 cylinder British diesel here are the possibilities . IH Utility B-250, B-275, B-276, B-414 and 434. I don't think you'd find a 444 or 384 for $1,500., those being 70s-80s tractors. The above list is from 250 being oldest in 1956 to the 434 being newest in late 60s. Basically each one replaced the last in the order they are listed. Those tractors are all basically the same, 250 had transmission driven PTO, rest were Live PTO. Cubic inches increased in the newer models.

In a Farmall it could be a Super BMD or a B-450, both look like an American M.

Hugh, Were the B-276 and 434 for the Canadian market only in North America? I`ve seen one 434 in my life and never even heard of a B-276.

Mark: Canada, particularly eastern Canada is loaded with these British tractors. B-250, B-275, B-414, 434 are very common. I've only ever seen a couple of 276. There is, or at least there was last week, a real nice looking 276D for sale at Rath Farm Equipment at Arnprior in eastern Ontario. I picked that up on IRON SOLUTIONS last week. He also has a couple of decent looking 434 diesels.

I remember when the 276 came on the market, we had been getting 275 3-4 years. It seemed like 276 was only around a few months until 414 hit the market. I have a feeling IH never intended to introduce 276 to North America, and they ran out of 275 before the 414 was introduced. The 276 probably had a 2 year production and sales run across Europe. There are good records when each of these were in production. Problem is I can't remember the years each were sold in Canada. Maybe JimB or some other faithful Canadian YTer can give us the answer. My tractors from those years were all Farmalls.

Hugh,So the B-276 was kind of a transition tractor like the 330 Utility(350U rear end with 340 motor). It would be interesting to find out how many 276`s were built-you may have a reasonably rare tractor. Do you know what was different on a 276 vs. a 275 ?

Hi, post a picture and probably can identify the tractor. Engine type should be stamped on right side of the block on a raised machined cast part in line with oil filter top and below hydraulic pump. Should be BD-154 (B414,434,444,384) or BD-144 (B250,B275,B276).
Re B414 and B276, as I recall, my Dad signed a purchase order for a B414 in Dec. 1961 but they had not been released in Canada yet(reason, CDN tax laws at the time allowed a farmer to depreciate a Dec. purchase for the full year, not so anymore). We had to drive to the farm show in Toronto in Jan. 1962 to see a B414. Our local dealer did not receive our B414 until mid May of 1962. The B276 was released about the same time but I do not believe IH sold many as the main competition was the MF 35 and the MF 35 would out class the B276 but the B414 was better than the MF 35, so IH pushed the B414 if there was MF competition.
