1948 IH tractor identity

neighbor has an IH tractor with the folloowing number cast into the right side main chassis.
360486-R2.
He thinks it is a 1948 Farmall, I don't know, can't find any pictures that look like it on the net.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you, John in Florida

Can you post a picture? The number you gave us is a part number. Take the part number to a caseIH dealer and they can tell you what tractor that part was used on. Armand

Post a photo, or look for the ID plate with model and serial numbers.

360486-R2 APPEARS to be the PART NUMBER for the clutch housing on a 300U, and it MAY have been used on other machines, as well.

John: What you've given us is a part number. If as Bob says it's clutch housing for a 300U, I think that part is the same on Farmalls as Utilities 300 and 350.

Next question does this tractor have 28" or 38" rear wheels? 28" will be Utility, 38" will be Farmall. Once we get that there are minor differences between 300 and 350 in each case.

If this be the case Steve's tractor 54,55,56,57 or 58., and not 48.

Steve, you ought to trust Google to answer your questions. Copy and paste the part number into a Google search box and you will get three hits for further follow-up.

You are now in the "information age".

On the same housing where you got that # look on the same side just behind engine and up near top for a serial plate held on with 4 rivets. This plate will have the tractor serial # stamped in it. May be painted over, if its in good shape you may be able to read tractor model. If its like a lot of them after years have gone by the serial # and some letters or letter is probably all thats readable. Some serial numbers for tractors that housing would fit overlap, so posting # may be enough to identify tractor or more info may be needed. Down below the cast # you posted there should be a date code the part was cast. Will have a # for month, # for day of month and a letter for the year. Z= 1954, A=55, B=56 C=57. As alresdy posted the tractor should be a 300 or 350 utility or farmall tractor, 1954 or newer.

Thanks for all the replys, the info really helped.
I used Yahoo to check the part number, brought up a picture of an IH 300 utility.

The build info just below the part number was
*3*5*A, which according to the date code made it manufactured in 1955.

The number stamped on the engine block 361553R1 would also seem to verify the 1955 manufacture.

The number cast on the engine block is *12*18*B,
does that indicate it was sold as a 1956 model?

The rear tires are 26 inch rims, so I guess they"re not original.

Thanks again for all the help, it"s been fun checking out all the old tractors and the great work you guys have been doing to return them to new life.

Sincerely, John in Florida

John: Those wheels could be original, 300U may have had an optional tire. Most of them were 28" as most Farmalls were 38". Ocasionally we see Farmalls with 36" rims. 26" would be quite reasonable on a Utility.
