Super A Coolant Question

I have been meaning to ask this question for some time, tonight I'm getting around to it. My Super A does not have a water pump, so does that mean it is a pressurized or non-pressurized system? Also, how much coolant does it require, or really, how do you know if you have enough. In the past, I've always just filled the rad to the top, however when I work it hard, such as snow plowing, it usually leaks out through the "blow off" pipe in the rad (coolant comes out bottom). I have been wondering if I just put too much in, or perhaps I have another issue? I do not have a temp gauge, and I always pre-mix the coolant and water.

Thanks for any / all replies.

Brian, If it does not have a water pump it is NON pressurized. I don't remember the exact amount it holds, but both our Super C and our Super H weep out of the overflow tube after they have been "topped off". Might just be that IH radiators need to be filled to a little lower level tha we are used to.

Brian you need to leave some room in the rad ,when the fluid heats up it will over flow if you have filled it to the top. My 656 needs about 2 inches from the top of the rad or it will over flow.

If the radiator cap "tongs" fit over the outside of the neck it is pressurized, inside non-pressure. The pressurized ones should have the level maybe an inch below the top. Non-pressurized are more likely to lose coolant until the proper level is reached. Pressurized ones are not "supposed" to until the boiling point of the water/antifreeze mix is reached. Well above 212 degrees. Put your hand on the cap, it will let you know if it is too hot -- no, I have never burned myself.

I have 2 pressurized C's and a Super A, none have water pumps. So, IH went to pressurized systems before the water pump became standard.

Having a water pump and being a pressure system really have nothing to do with each other.

Pressurized or not, you overfill it and the excess will push out the overflow. As long as the core is covered when it is cool it has all the coolant it needs.

Thanks for all the replies. I guess I have a non-pressurized since the flanges are on the inside. And I guess I will do nothing since it doesn't appear to leak, and I know it was topped up.

Thanks for all the responses again.

Brian.

...just when ya think ya know it all! Hehe ty for the info...never have had an IH w/o the water pump, but several of my Deeres are Thermo Syphon systems and are not pressurized so I assumed...!

Pete Don't know about the C, except I'll take CNKS as gospel. All Super C were pressurized with water pump from factory. First pressurized Super A from factory was serial number 336711, first water pump from factory was Super A1 serial number 356001.

Brian: All those car and pickups you've been driving the past 25 years have an over flow tank to expell excess coolant to, then suck it back to rad when room as coolant cools. Therein lies the reason you can fill those to the rad cover.

With these old tractors that storage tank for excess coolant is that top tank on radiator. You've got to leave room for coolant to expand. You could seal the rad, however it would blow up. Same as flatulance, if your don't get rid of it, you'll blow up.
