Tractor Vet, Need to Pick Yer Brain / C200

[This is not ONLY for TV, but for anyone who's experienced with the engines in question.]

TV, you're probably the most knowledgeable person around on the 6-cylinder gas Farmalls, so I guess you're the guy I need to ask.

I'm thinking about hunting up a C200 4-banger for a light truck project. Since the C200 is 2/3 of a C301, I'm thinking that bolting it up to the 6-cylinder truck bellhousing won't be a problem, and I can probably eliminate the governor by swapping a front cover from the truck 6 as well. I figure, worst case scenario, I can get someone to fabricate a header and an intake for a downdraft carb [if there's not an industrial downdraft setup already available].

So I was wondering if you knew of any particular weak points on the 4 that didn't show up in the 6-cylinder version. I know it wasn't a well-liked engine in the tractors, but maybe as a light truck motor it might work better.

Any thoughts?

Well first off i know of no intake for a down draft , but that does not mean that there was never one built . as to how it would perform here again i don't know. IF i was to under take a swap out on a small truck myself i would be thinking about a 4 BT cummins . Set at say a round 110 hp . But to each his own . Wish i could be more of help on this but you are going where i have not.

If the engine was from a constant RPM application, especially low speed tractor apps, it might not behave too well at truck RPM. Cam profiles, and ignition systems are certainly in need of a close look. A smaller engine will be working harder to keep pace. Good for economy, hard on engine systems twisted into high speed use. I like The Vet's idea best. JimN

I have been kicking that idea around a lot over this nice winter weather about finding a Dodge Dakota club cab 4x4 with a 5 speed and a bad engine . Several years ago while helping my one brother with his Jeep that he was always working on just about every weekend so he could go to work on Monday i told him that that is what we should do and i knew of a place that had a bunch of 3.9's out of bread trucks . Well not long ago i saw where a guy did infact put a 3.9 into a CJ jeep and had it hooked to the standard trans. and transfer case. DId a fine job on it. and was clamming 35 plus on mileage.

I have a CJ3B 1957 With an IH Kseries truck cab over the original body work. (and rack and pinion steering from a Tyota Tercel) that is interesting. Always fun to twist things in interesting directions. Jim

ih made a 4 cyl truck engine in the 70s. it was in the scout models. 196 cubic inches.

don't know anything more about that however.
