53 Super M Will Not Start

I have a gas 53 Super M that has always ran like a top. While disking a field I heard a change in motor sound. Disked out of the field and when I idled down it died. The motor turns over, I have fire and I believe fuel since its leaking out of the carb. I am just looking for a good place to start isolating the problem. Did it jump time and is this common? Thanks in advance for any help.
 
Remove plug No1 near the radiator and bring No1 piston to TDC on the compression stroke, then see where the rotor is pointing. Should be at the No1 plug tower. The distributor may have sheared a key or worse the timing gear may have sheared the key. Hal
 
Sound like it's jumped time on account of a broken cam gear. (It's not unusual problem for the Stage II Super M, 400 and 450 with the live pump.)

Quick check: Turn the crank until the TDC mark on the front pulley aligns with the pointer on the gear cover. Then remove the distributor cap and mark on the body where the rotor is pointing.

Now unbolt the hydraulic pump/distributor assembly and pull it back away from the mounting plate (you can leave the hyd hoses attached). Inside you will see the cam drive gear inside the gearcase. Reach in with your fingers or a large screwdriver and try to move the cam gear forward/back. If there's ANY movement whatsoever it's a sure sign the gear hub has busted.

Replacing the cam gear is straightforward and not terribly expensive - a new gear is about $150 or so. However some large and heavy parts (ie. the entire front end) must be removed to get at it.
 
Start simple, does it have good spark, still at the correct time. Look at plugs, do they show gas or dry. Remove pipe and hold hand over carburetor inlet while cranking. If it sucks agian your hand the cam and valves are probably working. If it builds oil pressure while cranking the cam is turning back to oil pump. If the fire timing and fuel checks okay, run a compression check then go into engine if needed.
 
Thanks for the help, looks like it going to be a fuel issue. The spark plugs are dry each time and gas is going out the bottom of the carb. I have plenty of suction at the intake, I have good fire and the rotor button is hitting #1 on the cap as the #1 cylinder is under compression. The day this happened the governor did not come on as smooth as usual, had a harder surge, do you think it could have been that it was having to work harder to add the extra fuel. Going to rework the carb and start there.
 
If it had jumped time you would have heard more than a change in the motor sound. You would have heard some bangs and pops.
I think it's a fuel issue. Are the plugs real wet or real dry?

You should be able to start the tractor by holding your hand over the throat of the carburetor unless you're not getting gas to the carburetor. Open that main jet adjusting screw to see if that helps. Hal
