Thanks For help On SMTA

Hi, I would like to thank everybody on here that helped me get my SMTA back together. I finally tracked down the correct M&W engine parts I needed, and rebuilt the carb, distributor and head. as well as a few smaller things on the tractor. All I have ever really worked on was a different color with a few fewer cylinders. I got it running last night and took it for a spin. The only thing that really dissapointed me was when I pulled the whoopty do lever in 5th gear nothing happened, it worked in the lower gears but not in 5th. So I am going to save that project for one of you IH guys. Now it is time for somebody on this board to come over to my house and get the red tractor out of my garrage for a small nominal fee. Anyway thanks again I am glad that I finally have a place to work on tractors again and it definitely was a learning experience to work on another brand of tractor. I will be posting a this tractor soon in the classified section on here.

Could be wrong but I don't think you are supposed to pull the whoopty do in 5th. I sure wouldn't want to try it.

I don't think he was under load. If wide open, unloaded in 5th (not saying he was), speed drop from about 16 to 12 mph -- what does that do? IF loaded and pulled down from 16 to 12, before pulling TA, perhaps that's ok. I would use a little discretion. Seems I have read on here not to use it for speed reduction -- that's what I meant.

I was not intentionally trying to slow down, I was just trying to find out if the ta worked or not. I had been told by a local IH man to try the ta in 5th and slightly apply pressure to the brakes. Well when I did that I was not going forward any more. I am not sure why it worked in the lower gears, but it might have something to do with with oil being warmer by the time I tried 5th gear out.

With the lever back, and applied brakes, if it stopped and the rpm stayed up the TA is bad. It likely will not function properly in the lower gears under load.
