Questions about Farmall M

I recieved a phone call from a neighbor today tell me he wants to sell his M. I haven't looked at it yet but it has one hyd remote and no three point hitch, just a drawbar and good rubber all around. Does anyone build a good three point hitch for a M? Can a second axu hyd outlet be added? Did all the M models have the same engine? Is there anything special I need to look for on this tractor? It also has a narrow front end. I will try to go look at it tomorrow and get a serial number.

Everyone on here likes the saginaw 3 point kits. I don't know how much they cost but they are known to be good and are good looking when put on. All of the engines in M's are the same. The MD is Diesel.

We have a 1941 farmall M that we have added 6 hyd. valves. Three are dedicated to the loader and one is dedicated to the three point hitch. That leaves two remotes for other uses. If you have any questions e-mail is open. Armand

The M had kerosene, distillate, and gasoline engines (Also diesel in the MD, as mentioned below). The kerosene and distillate engines run fine on gasoline, and were designed when those two fuels were cheaper than gas. They were very common during the gas shortage in WWII. The gasoline engine has higher compression and the most power. It is designated by an X1 following the chassis serial number.

When you are looking it over, see if it has power steering; that is very handy on an M.
In addition to what Armand told you, you can add a remote valve and have a second hydraulic line to the rear, thus giving you both down and up pressure. There are original IH valves, Char-Lynn and probably other brands for this purpose.

You might check it for live hydraulics. Probably a hydraulic pump ahead of the distributor. That is a great addition. Especially if you run a 3 point or loader. If it does have the live pump listen for any rattle in the front cover as they tend to take out the camshaft drive gear. Other then mentioned below, many of the Ms around today have been overhauled at least once and usually "super" kits put in making them an extra 1/8 larger sleeves. All fuel engine generally has 2 fuel tanks, unless it has been changed.
