Hey folks I have a a 1954 super A tractor and needing to know what is the best type and weight oil to use in the engine. Also do you use 90 weight oil in the transmission and what about the hydralics what type oil. Thanks

15W-40 in the engine, 90, 80W-90, 85W-140, 140, etc in the transmission/rear end, Hytran or equivalent in the hydraulics. If the chassis serial is 356001 or above it is a Super A-1, likely worth a little more than a Super A in the same condition. Would suggest you buy an Operators manual, you will find maintenance info you wouldn't know otherwise.

Patrick: Crankcase oil depends on where you live, if your far enough south 30W. If not go multi grade 15W-40. Diesel grades of those are best. You could also use 10W-30. Personally I use 15W-40 in everything, have for 25 years.

Rear end, final drives and steering box 90W gear oil or heavier. Hydraulic system Hytran or equivilant.

Don't forget the steering gear box also. Originally designed for 90 wt gear oil, but most leak now and most folks use grease in them. JD corn head grease is a good choice.

Do not put oil meant for deisel engines in your gas tractor unless you are opting for the latest oil designed for the newest ultra low sulfer engines.

While most oils designed for gas engines have a very low sulfated ash level (Case/IH still advertises it on their jugs) traditional deisel oils actually have an "excessive" level of sulfated ash.

For an "A" even the cheap Wal-Mart Super Tech is a vast improvement over the oils used even in the early 1980s - much less what got poured into it in the 1950s.

I run the same HD SAE 30 in my diesels and gas tractors. Never had a problem related to oil in either. Overhauled my SC in 1995 and average about 400 hours a year on it. Still runs like a top and no smoke.

dhermesc: Bullfeathers!!! I've own or have owned a dozen Farmall and Case gassers that have thousands of hours and never seen anything but diesel grade crankcase oil. I've been using it in GM cars and trucks for 45 years plus. Can't say as I've ever had a failure, unless you call 300,000-400,000 miles per engine a failure. I even used diesel grade in a 4 cycle lawn mower for 30 years, and the only thing original was the engine.
