Distributor question on SC

I'm having an intermittent spark problem on my SC. This is a newly re-built engint that I'm test running with a jumper wire from the battery. I have great spark, and then nothing. I used the original dist. insulator, but that looks fine. Swapped condensors, etc. I put a film of grease on the distributor where it slides into the drive housing. Maybe that's effecting the ground? Also, when I snap the points by hand, I could swear the spark is arcing down to the ignition plate. My eyes aren't what they used to be, but it sure looks to be arcing. Any reason for that?

Thanks, Doug

If the wire you are using to "hot wire it" is sound, and your certain of the connection integrity there, I suspect the points are shorting out to the distributor plate. The tiny nut holding the spring, ans the condenser lead can bengd the spring against the plate, This might just require a re install of the points. JimN

Might not be the same problem, but I had to clean the rust etc. from the outside of the coil lead on the distributor. However you say your spark is intermedient. Sounds like a bad connection or a bad wire. Why are you hotwiring? Since these tractors are positive ground, did you bring your power from the positive side of the battery or the negative? If you came from the positive side and the rest of the wiring is proper, switching the tractor on could cause a direct short.
