McCormick-Deering 10-20; what is this hole in motor?

I thought I already posted this so I apologize if it is a duplicate.

Found this hole leaking hole under the magneto. My other unfinished motor has some cork shoved in it.

What is this hole and what is it for? Can I just put a bit of peratex in it to stop the oil flow?

Thanks,

Dave

I've got a 10-20. If I remember, I'll look tonight and see what is there on my tractor.

Dave, My 10-20, Regular and F-20 all have that hole, mine have what looks like a set screw head in the hole but I am in the dark on what it does!

I just looked at my 10-20. It looks like a piece of wood or cork is in the hole covered up by some very hard caked-on grease. Anyway, the hole is not used for anything.
If my tractor was show quality like yours, I"d probably clean it out, put a dab of clear or blue RTV (silicone)in the hole to plug it up and paint over it. But that"s just me.

Thanks for checking guys. I will plug it with some permatex and paint over it. That way I can remove it easy if I need to get in there.

However, we still need to find out what the hec this hole is for. My other motor had some cork in there but it was broke off flush and when we picked at it with a knife, it was evident that it was cork.

Funny.

It could be for machining fixtures used only during manufacture. If it leaks, it may need a new cork (just thinking out loud) JimN

Cork in my 10-20 too; I suspect the Regular and F-20 as well, but didn't check; no such feature on my 22-36.

The Permatex idea should be fine; but, like Jim, I'd be inclinded to just put in a new cork.

I have to wonder if it wasn't for some feature that never became popular. The drilled holes left from machining the camshaft oil trough holes are tapped and plugged with a screw, so I'd think that would be the case for a machining fixture hole too.

My first thought was a power unit accessory [low oil shut off, or return from an rocker oiler system], but I think the 200s and P-30s were too late to have dictated this feature. Guess, I'm stumped too. :?
