1566 fine metal filings

My 1566 goes through hydraulic filters in about a hour.. They keep getting plugged with real fine metal flakes. I pulled the pto and cleaned the botttom of the housing along with installing a new filter and the tractor lasted about a hour in the field. When it plugs the hydraulics really whine..ie the pump is aerating. Would my brakes by going to heck in the rear causing the fine metal pcs in the rear end? BTW this is the 3rd filter in the last 4 or so hours..

Sounds like you had better park it untill you find what is going on. When you do find it and fix it change the filters every hour until the polluted system is cleaned up. It is hard to say what is wrong but your hydrualic pump is getting starved for oil and it will be ruined next. You may have a bearing out and eating into the case somewhere. The more you run it the more expensive it will be too fix. It won't fix itself.

Brakes can add to the particles.

When was the fluid last changed? I would change it and then see if you still get a build up. Maybe replace the brake discs at the same time.

If there is no larger pieces laying in the bottom of the filter housing it can not be to serious.

I assume you are keeping the transmission full of fluid?

You might want to place a cow magnet in the rear housing and see what it collects. You have a serious parts/wear issue that needs to be addressed NOW!!!!

I would agree, it sounds like you have a bearing or something going out and it just hasn't resulted in catastrophic failure - yet.

The metal filings that you are finding are most likely from the Torque Amplifier in your tractor. You need to park the tractor and get this repaired ASAP. The filings will destroy the spools in your multiple control valve. Very costly if not addressed. I have seen this happen on 2 other tractors. Not pretty.

the worst case of 'metal fileings in the rear end' i had was a bad inner axle bearing on my 1466. the bearing chewed through the inner race and ruined the axle, the bull gear got chewed up too. i took the rear end completely apart and put all new bearings in it, not cheap or easy.

Worked on one like that a few years back and it was a bearing in the final drive. At first we didn't even find filings but a gear froze to the top shaft. Fixed that and then the filters started plugging. Found it by draining the oil in the final drive and balls fell out.
