I was looking at a picture of a F12 and didn't see brake pedals? What kind of brakes are on a F12?
Thanks

Little bitty hand levers for each side. Trust me, they can be a hand full in hill country. One other thing, the steering automaticly applys the brake on the side you are turning to to help with steering and that part is nice! F12s were the best cultivator tractors of there day. F-14s had longer levers but same basic set up.

We used to have an F12 and I used a piece of pipe that was partially flattened on one end. Not as good a foot brakes but better. Incidently later made foot brake conversion for same tractor. Also installed flat head ford v8. More fun. We were poor people. Bernie Steffen

Originally on steel, the F-12 did not really need brakes for stopping. The lugs themselves would dig in and stop the tractor almost immediately. I suspect that is why the levers were so short. The latched lever on the right is mostly useful for holding the tractor when the pulley is being used. A long, heavy belt would tend to sag and pull the tractor forward. Like the other writer here, I used a pipe on our F-12. The problem was that it was heavy and its flopping eventually made the pivot for the lever pretty sloppy. We had no cash and it never occurred to us to go and BUY F-14 levers.
The lefthand lever could be used, I suppose, but I don't recall ever using it. It has no latch, anyway. The automatic turning brakes are excellent.
Very sturdy tractor, very convenient (for its day) for all kinds of chores. On rubber, we pulled a 7' double disk (meant for our 10-20) in second gear, and a double 12" Little Genius plow (no, not at the same time!). This was really too much of a load for the tractor on steel wheels, but rubber tires absorb far less power and allowed the tractor to be used almost in the next category up. The H that my father bought to replace his 10-20 couldn't do much better than the F-12 with both the same plow and the same double-disk.

Did the turning brakes work off a cable that ran around the front of the tractor like the F 20 ? None of the ones that I have seen for sale have the cable attached but thats probably because people have removed it.

The 12s and 14s used rods rather than cables to apply the inside brake when turning. The rod is actually inside the channel of the frame rails except the end on back where they attach to an actuating piece next to the brake lever itself.
