Hey everyone.
I had to pull my govnor off my 74 cub. Know I cant get it timed right. I cant seem to find the marks on the idler gear, that mesh with the mark on the distriobuter/govnor gear. Any ideas on what to do??
Thanks
Chuck

Hard to see the mark with the governor seal in there. With the #1 piston at TDC and the timing pointer lined up the the mark on the crank pulley, the timing mark on the idler gear will be in view, looking through the hole where the distributor mounts up. Of course with the seal in there, the dot can't be seen, so you need to come in through the front with a insp mirror, locate the dot and mark the teeth with a piece of chaulk. Then the governor can be reinstalled in time. The recesses on the gov gear for the distributor lugs should be at roughly the 2 and 8 oclock positions.
Good Luck.

Get ahold of a digital read out timing light that has a rpm reading [tach].

Run the motor up to full throttle and turn the dist tell yo get the max rpm on the tach and lock it down.

I have a dyno and we set the bigger tractors timing under load . But setting it the way i listed above will get you ware you want to be.

Remember your only useing the tach in the timing lite nothing else, it lets you stand right there to see the change.
