Farmall 140 not running well

I have a Farmall 140 with a belly mower that we only use to mow. Recently the engine has started performing poorly. Mainly when the pto is engaged and I am mowing. It will start to putt/cutout and will eventually kill itself if I do not stop. I noticed that if I pull the choke it seems to run a lot better.. but still not great. Then yesterday.. even with choke pulled it dies. I believe after it cools I can fire it up again, but will eventually die again. I pulled the Marvel Schebler carb off and nothing looked broke and/or dirty. I plan to check ign. system this evening but was curious if anyone has run into this as well. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

If it has a coil ignition, check to see if it's too hot to touch after a short run. Often when a tractor runs poorly hot - it's the coil.

I had a bad coil cause a 140 to sputter and stop after it warmed up. Choking wouldn't help though. Similar problems on my 140's always turned out to be something in the ignition sys breaking down. I would start at the coil (does it run OK when 1st started?). Then points, cond, grounding connection on inside of distributor, and don't forget wires and plugs (wire brush them). See any sparks around ign sys at night? I also had a sputter problem when a plug wasn't seating all the way in.

Choking would help if problem is in fuel sys. Make sure screens/strainers are clean and steady flow comes out at carb. Remove the oil bath cannister at the bottom of air intake while running and see if it improves.

Could also be a valve sticking. Many possibilities.

At some point I would do a compression test.

If you fix it, let us know what the problem was.

Thanks for the tips, I will check these when i get home tonight. All i know off the top of my head is, it gets real bad when pto is engaged (assuming the load is whats killing it) and before it started killing it all together I could drive around fine but when pto was engaged it all went down hill. I can also add it has been a progressive decrease... it didnt just all happen at once. But again, thank you for your help, I will be sure and post what i find.

So it loses power under load. Remember, if plugs are firing only half the time, you're left with half the power which could cause a stall under load. Here's one trouble shooting tip (after you check rest of ig sys), if you have a timing light, put the pick up on each plug wire and see if you get a steady strobe on each.

got home, put tractor back together, ran it, coil never got hot, I ended up taking the cup off bottom of air breather, and it still did it..(when it started choking down i could hear a popping noise coming from where i removed cup from bottom of air filter) I only had enough time to check a few things... ohms of wires were all really close (they are new) I cleaned the points and what not.. I did notice there was a slight oil buildup in the cap.. should oil be getting into dist.?? tonight i will put light on each wire, check plugs, and possibly comp check. thanks again guys. also quick question.. we have the woods L59 belly mower with the huge single belt... where can i get replacement belts? and also where can i get parts for my farmall? thanks!

The fact that choke aids the symptoms tells me to keep looking at the fuel side.

There isn't a lot there...

I'd pull off the fuel line to the carb and check for gasoline flow.

Also a good idea is to split & drain the carb bowl. I'd check the freeness of the needle valve (actuated by the float).

If enough water gets inside there (it is the low point of the system)...eventually it will get to the point where the tractor don't like to run on water
