farmall 656 gas

Hi,
I have a farmall 656 gas, transmission (not hydro) narrow front end. My neighbor has a 656 wide front end which I would like to install on my tractor. Question is: Will this directly swap or is something different between the two front ends which I should know about? Thanks.

The most difficult part will be figuring out how to hold the fronts of the tractors when there is no axle under them. Be careful.

I thought about that, but haven't got it completely figured out. Have you got some words of advice for me? I've never done anything like it.

My favorite way to hold up tractors without front ends is to use splitting stands.

Basically some heavy-duty uprights that bolt to the frame rails solidly using at least 3 bolts per side.

I have also used wood blocks stacked, very wide on the bottom and gradually narrowing towards the top. It was OK - but I prefer the splitting stands.

Plan every step and think about what might go wrong. The tractor is heavier than you think it is, no matter how heavy you think it is. Use stout cribbing to support it: not just a jack. If it falls on you it is likely to kill you (or leave you wishing it had).

Also think about how you are going to get the new axle into position. It is also heavier than you think it is. You aren"t going to be able to hold it up with one hand and put bolts in with the other.

Best way by far, if you"ve got them or can make them.

By all means use front splitting stands on both tractors. I would not attempt it any other way!!! A good way to build them would be to use used semi-trl. landing gear as they are heavy duty and adjustable. It is possible to use a crank on each leg. They do not have to have the pipe connecting them togather. Somebody posted a picture of them in the last month or two on either this forum or All The Rest. I would use either a forklift or a loader to lift the wide front. A heavy duty transmission jack would also work. If you have any questions please ask. E-mail is open. Armand
