MD Starter Valves-Followup

Ordered the 4 starter valve springs From my friendly CaseIH dealer. It looks like I have to remove the head to get to them, and CaseIH wants $168 for a MD head gasket. Two Questions:
1. Do I have to remove the head to get to the starter valve springs?
2. Anyone know a source for the head gasket that might not cost an arm and a leg?
Thanks, John

Ask The vet, But I think that a 15" X 1/4" cotton rope can be snaked into the Cylinder head through the injector hole, and used to wedge the valve closed while working on the spring. One rotates the engine gently against the rope and it pushes on the head of the starting valve. Hand crank only!! JimN

You are working on a MD (expensive). Head gasket set sounds about right. Bought one for my SMD and I think it was about the same price.

dont buy a head gasket until the cylinder head is off. The head gasket could be one of two varieties, and this variation is due to the cylinder sleeves.
