756 Hydraulic Update

Discovered were my rear hydraulic pump is sucking its air, 'I think'. I added oil with the flowrater hooked up and the engine idleing. When the oil covered the suction tube connection into the filter compartment the air stopped. It must be leaking enough air for the rear pump to get air but not the front pump as the inlet for the front pump is three inches lower. I then pumped oil below the tube and removed the filter cover. I plugged the tube and pumped the oil back in and a stream of oil is running out around the tube. So looks like I get to pull the lift housing to replace a little oring. Lot cheaper than a new pump tho.

It sounds like you got it all right. These type of things aren't supposed to happen as the front pump is usually much more trouble some when sucking air is an issue. I'm just sitting here trying to remember though if I was ever succesful at getting the bolt out holding the suction tube in place by working through the pto as you will probably have to remove it even if you remove top cover. Of course it is usually done when differential etc is being repaired.

I don't know its quite aways forward but maybe. Just thinking when I had the pump out I could see the bolt. Maybe I could reach it thru the pump hole. Worth a try I guess, easier than pulling the cover.

A lot of us just run an extra 5 gallons of fluid to keep the suction tube covered. Beats doing a lot of mech a nic work.

U can get the bolt out with the IPTO removed.By removing the maim pump it will be easier to get the tube thru the o-ring.No need to remove the top cover.I have done 3 this way.Good luck.

To cover the main suction tube it takes more like 8 gallons and that means the rear differential and front speed trans gears run half submerged in oil. It will churn the oil and I'am afraid lead to seal leakage problems and power loss.

Just walked through the salvage yard looking for a few things this morning and took a peek into some rear ends and my memory got jogged, yes you can get the bolt out holding tube from the rear.
