i have a 544 hydro i brought last fall and it shifted fine this spring it wouldn"t start so ipulled it in the garage 100 ft, and didn"have the shifter in nuturel ialso had to disconnect the hyd filter to get the starter off now it keeps stoping in forward then takes off again like it"s air bound but reverse works fine any ideas Tom

No difference hot or cold? Just erratic behavior? Reverse absolutely good and solid? When it does move forward, it is a good solid forward drive?

Sure sounds like the snap ring came off the end of the shuttle valve. When this happens, the guy doesn't know where neutral is; it has lost it's "centering" reference. Takes about 5 minutes to repair.
