I am restoring a 1948 Farmall M and need to replace the output shaft seal. Is there anyway to replace this seal without splitting the tractor. If anyone has information, I would appreciate hearing from you at my e-mail address above. Bob

Output of what? Belt pulley, PTO, are the only "outputs" The belt pulley drive comes off of the trans top with 6 bolts, then disassembles (you might need a press to get it apart and together.)
The PTO seal can be replaced Without taking it apart. Drive it so it points down hill (as steeply as you feel safe) so tranny lube stays inside. JimN

The seal I need to replace is in front of the transmission where the spline and universal joint couple. If I used the incorrect terms in my previous question, I appolize and hope you can help with this. Thanks, Bob Lanford

The seal is easily changed. caseih.com choose your country, then select parts and service tab with pull down menu. select parts.
on the next page choose "begin your search here".
in the box put Farmall
then scroll down to M
then choose chassis
then choose transmission
The clutch pictures may also help.
This gives numbers and exploded views.
Pull the Belly Pump.
Take out three of the clutch pressure plate bolts (at 120 degrees from each other) this leaves 3 other bolts.
Put these bolts into the back of the Pressure plate (there are three holes with threads) this releases the clutch (pushes in the fingers), and allows the clutch shaft to be removed.
Remove the four bolts holding the drive coupling together. Take pictures of the assembly to assure reassembly in the correct orientation of the drive plate in this joint. Remove the clutch shaft (it will come out it is a geometric puzzle, but done quite often world wide!
Now the retainer is easily accessed to change the seal. Many bearing and NAPA stores will be able to cross the number. Other directions are in the archives for removing the pump, (heavy and awkward) I hope this helps, JimN

Would like to thank JimN for the above information. Everything went back together yesterday successfully. Thanks much for the good information. Bob Lanford
