I have my axle housings off an M and they are stamped LH and RH...also it is sometimes referred in service manuals....is this standing in front of the grill looking at the tractor...or standing behind then tractor looking forward to determing left and right??

that would be as if your sitting on the tractor. same on engines as your standing behind looking at the flywheel.

Why not take one of your axle housings and see what side fits best on the tractor? When that is done, check the "LH" and "RH" and you will have your answer.

Why is there no confusion on "Port" and "Starboard". Every sailor knows the difference and doesn't contemplate where he is standing or looking.

Port is a full-bodied wine that can give you a really terrible headache if you drink too much of it. Alkies really like Thunderbird White port because it's cheap and gets the job done.

There's no red port left. Remember that and you know that left is port, red light on watercraft/ aircraft is left or port.

My pneumonic (spelling ?) device is to remember that the three smallest words "red", "port", "left" go together.

It's a good thing that we are not talking about Studebakers. Not sure if they had a front or rear, just two ends. Without that info, who would know where the left or right was.

By convention, right and left are determined by sitting in the driver"s seat, facing forward. Same convention applies to automobiles, trucks, and every other motorized conveyance I"ve ever seen referenced left & right.

Gary,

Just so you know, Mike CA is an active duty Chief in the USN. I think he is headed to IRAQ soon. Or maybe it is just sea duty on an aircraft carrier. Can't remember.

Wardner,
Thanks, I did know that, that's why the reference to boats, just to add a little sarcasm instead of the prefered ship, kind of an interservice dig.

Father of a friend of mine taught at the Naval War College for a while. In a class on surface warfare, he allowed as how "A boat is what you get into when your ship begins to sink." But then he was a tin-can guy -- didn't know a thing about subs.
